Each
of these Japanese Washi paper doll (kami-ningyo) cards is handmade by
Uiko. Born outside of Tokyo, Uiko loves to capture the beauty and grace
of the Japanese women and carefree attitude of Japanese children at
play. Through her study of Japanese classical dance, she uses her
experience with dance movement, kimono dressing and kimono fabrics to
produce realistic impressions of the Japanese in kimono. Uiko has been
designing and creating her own kami-ningyo cards for over twenty years
Kami-ningyo means paper doll. The traditional method takes a piece of
paper through multiple folds to form the kimono. With the many folds
comes depth and simple yet elegant form. Uiko has adapted the
Japanese quilting designs to kami-ningyo by creating her own patterns
and combining layers of cut Washi paper to create layered Japanese
kimonos and obis. If you look closely, you'll see many of the dolls have
kanzashi (hair ornaments) as well. Each hand cut and combined for a
beautiful design.
These cards are handmade from beautiful
Japanese washi paper. The kimono and obi designs for the cards may
differ from that shown due to the availability of papers. As you can
see, however, all of the color choices are colorful and well matched.
